Long Beach Calif. --03-25-12 - The Long Beach Fire Department, Marine Safety Division hosted tryouts for Non-Career Ocean Lifeguards Sunday. Non-Career Ocean Lifeguards are a key component of the Long Beach Fire Department's public safety service during the summer. The lifeguards are responsible for watching the water along seven miles of beaches and 22 square miles of waterways. The lifeguard hopefuls competed in a 1,000 yard open water ocean swim, and run-swim-run. Qualifying individuals will be offered an opportunity to complete non-career lifeguard training, and successful graduates become eligible to enter the Long Beach Lifeguard workforce. To help promote the upcoming 23rd annual America's Family Pet Expo at the Orange County Fairgrounds on April 20-22, children at the Long Beach Boys & Girls Club were given the chance to pet puppies as well as some exotic animals. Representatives from Barks of Love animal rescue center brought two puppies and a dog for the children to play with and teach them about being a responsible pet owners. Forever Wild animal sanctuary brought a desert tortoise, a baby alligator, a snake and a skink for the children to pet.
