  • Long Beach, Calif. --12-12-11 - Members of the Long Beach Fire Department fight a fire that broke out at the historic Adelaide Tichenor house, 852 East Ocean Blvd. The home built in 1904 was one of three homes in Long Beach designed by the famous Pasadena architects Charles & Henry Greene. This building pioneered the influence of Japanese design and originally had a Japanese garden. The exterior construction of clinker brick panels set in wood timbers is unique. The Green brothers are renowned for elevating the Craftsman style to a highly refined aesthetic. The home was extensively remodeled by architect Adrian Wilson in 1953. Adelaide Tichenor was an influential civic leader; she founded the Ebell Club, the City's public library, and the Tichenor Orthopedic Clinic. Damage was estimated at $200,000 and there were no injures. Stephen Carr/ Staff Photographer
